Day 1: Arrival in Djanet and First Impressions

After an eventful first day in Algiers, I met the group at the airport and we caught a red-eye flight from Algiers to Djanet, which had been delayed. We arrived just before dawn and made sure to run to the airport loo (for what would be the last time for 5 days), before we were whisked away by our driver to the camp, already set up for us. Exhausted from the journey, we got a few hours of sleep before waking up around 7 a.m. to the blazing sun. Stepping out of my tent, I had my first glimpse of the Sahara in daylight, and it was truly magnificent. I was the second one up, and I took some time to absorb the silence and vastness of my surroundings. Despite being close to town, the expansive desert felt endless.

Once everyone was awake, we packed up our camp, had breakfast, and I loaded my first roll of film into my camera. I decided to start with Crystal Film 250D. We drove into town to gather food and supplies. Djanet’s contrasting simplicity and complexity intrigued me, and I looked forward to exploring it more later in the trip. As we ventured deeper into the desert, my cell phone signal faded away, signaling the start of our true adventure.

The size of the rocks scattered across the landscape was awe-inspiring. We stopped near a massive rock formation, where our cook prepared lunch while we explored nearby cave paintings. I was surprised by the lack of protection for these ancient artworks. Returning for lunch, we had our first taste of traditional tea, meticulously prepared by our driver. This was followed by a post-lunch nap on mattresses laid out on the ground – a practice we would continue daily. Adjusting to the desert’s pace was challenging at first. Coming from a hectic lifestyle, it took time to learn how to relax in the middle of the day. After our nap, we drove further into the desert, crossing barren landscapes until we reached a rocky area where we set up camp for the night. This was my first experience with wild camping – setting up wherever we chose, without designated zones. It was incredible to realise how much of the day was spent without seeing another soul.

Exploring the area, we examined skeletal remains of animals and climbed rocks to find the perfect sunset viewpoint. Finding a comfortable spot on the rocks, I took a nap as we waited for the sun to set. This break from my usual high-stress life was already having a positive effect on me. After watching the sunset, we returned for tea and set up our tents before dinner. I had a few humorous attempts at using the sand as a bathroom – a new challenge I wasn’t quite mastering yet. I am well acquainted with camping in South Africa and the subsequent lavatory expectations. However, this didn’t directly translate to the situation in the desert. 

After spending some time chatting around the campfire, we headed to bed around 9:45 p.m. The first day in the Sahara was slow, allowing us to acclimate. I was the only one who hadn’t visited the Sahara through neighboring countries, so, as a photographer, it took time to adjust to the new environment and get a real sense of the light. Surprisingly, I found the first day without cell service easy and relaxing. Our group, a collection of solo travelers who first met online, quickly bonded over our shared love for photography and exploring the world. 

I have a strong sense that this first leg of my Algerian trip will be special. This is the first time in many years that I am able to spend time focusing exclusively on photography, surrounded by fellow travel photographers, each with their unique styles and experiences. I think the next few days will be an adventure. It is such a great feeling to be with people equally obsessed with storytelling and capturing the world's beauty.

The Long Wait to Visit Algeria

Since 2022, I had been trying to visit Algeria, but obtaining a tourist visa proved to be an insurmountable challenge. Despite my close affiliation with an English school in Algeria and having spent the last four years teaching dozens of Algerians, the visa process remained elusive. Many of my students and their parents have become close friends and a huge part of my life, and I was determined to find a way to visit them.

Then, in 2023, Algeria started a visa-on-arrival program for those wanting to visit the country and who will spend 70% of their trip in the desert. This seemed like the perfect opportunity, but I still didn’t know how to plan the trip. The breakthrough came when I saw a post on Instagram by an Algerian photographer who had partnered with a local tour agency to offer photography tours in the desert. I jumped at the opportunity and reached out to learn more.

This was in early 2024, and the next tour was scheduled for April 2024, just after Eid. After gathering all the necessary information, I decided to give it a shot. I completed all the paperwork but held off on booking flights or accommodation until the trip was confirmed. My previous attempts to visit had ended in disappointment due to visa issues, so I was cautious.

I reached out to two of my closest friends in Algiers to tell them about my plans. One of them invited me to stay at her home during my time in the city. I didn’t breathe a word of this to anyone else. A few weeks later, my boarding authorisation document arrived. I was absolutely stunned and quickly started booking flights and finalising my trip. Only once everything was confirmed did I inform the parents of my students and the rest of my colleagues in Algiers. With just a few weeks before my departure, I was still afraid to get the younger students’ hopes up due to the previous disappointments.

Every step of the journey felt surreal. I couldn’t believe I was finally getting to visit this country. Not only because I would finally get to meet so many people I had only interacted with online, but because I was finally able to visit the Sahara and do so with other photographers. I felt privileged to combine two of the things I love into one trip - photography and teaching. This would also be the first time I went on a trip with other photographers.

The Tour and Preparation

The tour was run by my friend, photographer and filmmaker Redouane Mahi, in collaboration with Agence Matrath Voyage, a tour company based in Djanet, in the south of Algeria. They took care of everything relating to the trip, from processing the visa on arrival paperwork to packing lists and local flights between Algiers and Djanet. While the tour company provided everything we needed for our time in the desert, I decided to take my own sleeping bag, various types of wet wipes and hygiene products, toilet paper, and snacks.

Unfortunately, Air Algerie had suspended their flights to Johannesburg at the time of my trip, so I chose to travel with Emirates, from Durban, instead. There are alternative options available from South Africa, such as with Air France from Johannesburg, but they are almost equal in price and duration.

I decided to take two bags with me - one with clothing for the city and gifts for my students, and one with what I needed for the desert as well as my sleeping bag. Since I would have a day in Algiers before my departure to Djanet, I could leave one bag at my friend’s home in Algiers. The two bags came in handy later! I took three cameras with me: my Fujifilm X-T3, my Pentax K1000, and my Ubuntu Memory Maker. I also took four rolls of 35mm film supplied by Crystal Film. Only the Fuji and the Pentax came with me to the desert, along with a roll of Vision3 250D and Fomapan 400.

Planning for Algeria

Here are some tips and insights from my experience planning this trip:

Tour Operator: Choosing a reliable tour operator is crucial. Redouane together with Agence Matrath Voyage were exceptional, handling all the logistics and ensuring a smooth experience. They were responsive, knowledgeable, and made the process of obtaining the visa on arrival seamless. 

Visa Process: The visa-on-arrival program is a game-changer for visiting Algeria. You simply have to complete a form and provide a copy of your passport to the tour operator. Stay in touch with your tour operator for updates. It’s essential to be patient and follow the process closely. The tour operator should email your boarding authorisation to you once it has been approved and stamped. This will function like a visa when you board your flight to Algeria. You will need to fill out an arrival card when you land in Algiers, as well as present your passport, boarding authorisation and proof of your return flight to the immigration officer. Keep the contact details of your tour operator on you, incase of any issues.

It is also important to note that your passport may be collected by immigration officers upon arrival in Djanet. This is to ensure you have all the necessary authorisations and documents. If this happens, your tour operator will be able to assist you with the verification process. Your passport will be returned to you before leaving the airport for your tour, so just be patient.

Packing: Bring light but essential items for the desert. Cool clothes and flip flops or slides are a must. I wore loose fitting trousers with t-shirts or shirts throughout my time in the desert. Don’t forget your hat, sunglasses and sunscreen! Bring a power bank if you will need to use your phone but note that signal is limited.

Photography Gear: Limit your gear to 1-2 cameras and 1-2 lenses. Avoid excessive equipment, and note that flying drones is prohibited.  I also recommend bringing a camera cover to protect your gear from the sand.

Currency: Algeria uses the Algerian Dinar (DZD) but this is not available outside of the country. Take US Dollars (USD), Euros (EUR) or British Pounds (GBP) which you can exchange on arrival. Speak to your tour company for assistance with exchanging money.

Best Time to Visit:
Spring and autumn offer the most pleasant weather. Summer can be hot and crowded, while winter is mild on the coast and busy in the desert.

Local Customs:
Avoid taking pictures of anything related to the military or the government. Algeria takes security very seriously and there is a strong police presence in Algiers. Algeria is a Muslim country so the weekend is on Friday and Saturday. Dress modestly, especially in rural areas. French is widely spoken, but learning a few Arabic phrases can be helpful. Many younger people have some knowledge of English. Alcohol is legal in Algeria but it is not widely available, as far as I could tell. Try Hamoud soda instead - thank me later!

Final Thoughts

My trip to Algeria was an extraordinary journey filled with moments of awe, joy, and deep connection. From the bustling streets of Algiers to the serene expanses of the Sahara, every experience was enriched by the people I met and the places I explored. This trip not only allowed me to meet many of my students and friends in person but also gave me the opportunity to pursue my passion for photography in one of the most stunning landscapes on earth.

Edinburgh: A Blend of History and Magic

Edinburgh is a city where history and magic come alive. As a Harry Potter fan, the Harry Potter walking tour of Edinburgh was an absolute delight. Wandering through the cobbled streets, it’s easy to see how J.K. Rowling drew inspiration from this city. The tour takes you to iconic locations like Victoria Street, which inspired Diagon Alley, and the magical Greyfrairs Kirkyard, the final resting place of many who’s names were inspiration for characters in the books.

The University of Edinburgh boasts some of the most amazing architecture I’ve ever seen. The historic buildings and courtyards provide endless photography opportunities. Don’t miss the chance to capture the grandeur of Old College and the picturesque McEwan Hall.

Glasgow: A Dynamic Urban Experience

In contrast to Edinburgh’s historic charm, Glasgow offers a vibrant and dynamic urban experience. Known for its art scene and nightlife, Glasgow’s energy is infectious. The city’s mix of Victorian and contemporary architecture creates a unique backdrop for photography. Highlights include the Glasgow Cathedral, the stunning Glasgow University and Hunterian Museum, and the vibrant street art in the city center.

One of my favorite tours was from Glasgow to Stirling, Loch Lomond, and the Trossachs. This tour offers a perfect blend of history, nature, and scenic beauty. Stirling Castle, with its dramatic views and rich history, is a must-see. The serene beauty of Loch Lomond and the rugged landscapes of the Trossachs provide a peaceful escape from the city’s hustle and bustle.

The Highlands: Nature’s Masterpiece

No trip to Scotland is complete without venturing into the Highlands. The dramatic landscapes of the Highlands are a photographer’s dream. From the mysterious depths of Loch Ness to the haunting beauty of Glencoe, the Highlands offer some of the most stunning scenery in the world.

I took a memorable tour from Edinburgh that included Loch Ness, Glencoe, and the Highlands. The tour provided a perfect opportunity to capture the raw beauty of Scotland’s landscapes, with plenty of stops for photos along the way, as well as the opportunity to search for Nessie! The eerie calm of Loch Ness, the rugged peaks of Glencoe, and the endless vistas of the Highlands left me in awe. Don’t forget to keep your eyes peeled for the famous Scottish Highland Cows, or Hairy Coos!

Photography Tips for Scotland

Golden Hour: The soft light during sunrise and sunset adds a magical touch to Scotland’s landscapes and cityscapes.

Weather: Be prepared for changing weather conditions. A bit of mist or rain can add a dramatic effect to your photos.

Composition: Use the natural lines and historic architecture to frame your shots. Look for unique angles to capture the essence of each location.

Today, I’m sharing my top three favourite cities in England for photographers. 1. London: Love It or Hate It

London is one of those cities you either love or hate, and for me, it’s a place of endless inspiration. The juxtaposition of modern skyscrapers against centuries-old architecture makes for extraordinary photos. Every corner tells a story, and every street holds a piece of history.

One of my favorite spots is the South Bank, where you can capture the iconic London skyline along the Thames (not to mention the South Bank Lion). The mix of historic landmarks like the Tower of London and the ultra-modern Shard offers a unique perspective that’s hard to find anywhere else.

Tips for Shooting in London:

• Blend in: Try not to get in the way of the locals. Be mindful of busy times and locations.

• Golden Hour: Early mornings and late afternoons offer the best lighting and fewer crowds.

• Hidden Gems: Explore less touristy areas like Camden Market and Shoreditch for vibrant street art and eclectic scenes.

2. Bath: A Fairytale Town

Bath is like stepping into a fairytale, with its Georgian architecture and Roman history. It’s a dream for any photographer, especially if you’re a fan of Bridgerton as this is where much of the show is filmed. The golden-hued Bath stone buildings create a warm, inviting atmosphere that’s perfect for capturing the essence of this historic city.

Walking through the streets of Bath feels like being transported back in time. The Roman Baths, the stunning Bath Abbey, and the picturesque Pulteney Bridge are just a few highlights that offer endless photography opportunities.

Tips for Shooting in Bath:

• Early Birds: Visit popular spots early in the morning to avoid crowds and capture serene scenes.

• Symmetry and Lines: Use the city's beautiful architecture to play with symmetry and leading lines in your compositions.

• Seasonal Beauty: Each season offers a different charm, from the autumn leaves to the spring blossoms.

3. Cornwall: Coastal Beauty

Cornwall is where nature’s beauty takes center stage. The rugged coastline, charming fishing villages, and the incredible Eden Project make it a must-visit for photographers. Whether you’re capturing the dramatic cliffs of Land’s End or the serene beaches of St Ives, Cornwall’s landscapes are breathtaking.

The Eden Project, is an extraordinary attraction featuring massive biomes that house the largest indoor rainforest in the world. Visitors can explore the lush gardens, walk among treetops, and enjoy interactive exhibits that highlight sustainable living - a paradise for macro and nature photography.

Tips for Shooting in Cornwall:

• Golden Hour Glow: Coastal landscapes look best during sunrise and sunset when the light casts a magical glow.

• Weather Watch: Be prepared for changing weather conditions, which can add dramatic effects to your photos.

• Local Charm: Explore the small villages and interact with locals for candid shots and unique perspectives.

Each of these cities offers a unique blend of history, culture, and natural beauty that’s perfect for photography. London’s dynamic mix of old and new, Bath’s timeless charm, and Cornwall’s stunning landscapes provide endless inspiration and opportunities to capture the essence of England.
